FAQ

What is a clicker?
A clicker is a small device held in your hand that makes a click noise when deployed. There are different types but the typical box clicker is pictured below. Another popular clicker is the i-click.  A wrist or finger band is often used with either clicker.
red clicker        The sound a clicker makes is distinct, short and has an advantage over your voice because it is consistent, has no emotion (yours) attached to it and is processed differently than human voice. It gives your training a positive edge!  Other markers can also be used. One example is the whistle that is commonly used by marine mammal trainers.  The whistle however takes more practice to be consistent and most dog trainers find that the clicker is the best choice.  You can purchase a clicker at the Karen Pryor Clicker Gear Store.

Don't I have to show my dog that I am the "leader of the pack"?
There are many ways to be a leader. Look around the world today and in the past...what kind of leader do you want to be?  I feel a good leader is someone that sets fair rules and consistently upholds these rules with good training and by building a human/canine bond based on mutual trust.  You do not have to use force, bullying or intimidation to do this.  For an in depth look at this topick and much much morek check out "Reaching the Animal Mind" an excellent book by well known author Karen Pryor.
