Training Methods
The method of training that I practice and teach is commonly called "Clicker Training"...
Clicker training is a type of training which has it's basis in a broader science called "operant conditioning". Clicker training uses the positive methods from operant conditioning. This methodology can be used with people, dogs, cats, mice, elephants, marine mammals, birds, fish and more!
The dog, horse, kitten, or pet of your choice earns a reward by offering a desirable behavior. The desired behavior is marked by a sound and is followed quickly with a reward. Your pet learns quickly, the learned behavior is remembered well, and your pet is eager to continue to "work" because the process has been positive and not punitive.
How does it work?
Well, you--the 'trainer' use a device that will precisely "mark" when your dog performs a behavior that you want to see.
You immediately give your dog a "reinforcer" following the "marker" sound.
Wait…what is a "marker" and a "reinforcer" you ask?
A marker is a sound that is distinct and easily heard. Most dog trainers use an old fashioned child's toy that is now called a "clicker". There is scientific research showing that short sharp sounds, such as though made by a clicker, are more quickly processed in the brain and lead to faster learning than using human speech.
A reinforcer is anything that the animal really wants or values--but most often food is used. Food is one of the primal needs and therefore is very important and highly valued. There are other reinforcers though that are also commonly used; a tug toy for a highly driven dog, chasing a ball or pleasant physical contact. All of these can be a reinforcer as long as the dog finds it rewarding.
Sound easy? It is!
