When Jeannine May came through our facility as a Karen Pryor Academy student I remember thinking to myself, “This one is ahead of the curve. She’s already skilled enough that this course might be too basic for her.” In a way I was right; Jeannine already was an experienced trainer with skills other students hoped to acquire. In another truly gratifying way I was wrong; Jeannine continually sought to improve her skills as she approached every lesson as if it was new to her.
Even more gratifying was seeing that her benchmark for success was not just how much “stuff” her dog learned, but more importantly how what she did affected the bond of trust between the dog and herself. Getting to know Jeannine through the years since then as fellow scentwork and behavior trainer, I’ve found her to be one who constantly scans the horizon for new knowledge and tests new techniques before imparting them to clients. The end result is that Jeannine is the sort of trainer you can trust to help you build a relationship with your dog that makes day-to-day life, work, or competition fun and productive . . . and isn’t that exactly what you’re looking for in your dog trainer?

“I have been a dog trainer for many years and during those years have spent a lot of time learning from, training with and teaching side by side with Jeannine. I think there is never a higher complement given to any professional than one given by their peers. I would highly recommend Jeannine to any dog owner seeking to improve the relationship with their Canine companion. You will come away from the experience with a greater knowledge and deeper understanding of what it takes to develop the dog you have always wanted to live with.”
Education and Training
“We think the world of Jeannine, and would highly recommend her as the person who can help you shape your dog into a loving and obedient companion.
It turned out that out of all of the adorable puppies in his litter, we picked the one that was extremely strong-willed, and we recognized that we needed help if we didn’t want him calling the shots in our house. We called our breeder, who recommended Jeannine.
Our dog took to Jeannine’s gentle and positive dog training skills on our first meeting, and over the course of the next several months she showed us how to shape our little monster into the loving and mostly obedient companion that he is today.
Jeannine uses gentle persuasion to get a dog to think that it is his idea to do what she wants him to do, and the bonus is that she will teach you how to do that too. Her love of dogs is immediately evident, and her skills are evident in the long lasting positive changes that you will see in your dog.”

“In November 2013 we took our first Truffle training class from Jeannine May with our yellow lab, Gucci. This was our first foray into scent work. Jeannie guided us step by step individualizing the pace of our instruction within the class to maximize both dog and human success and motivation. January 2015 Gucci was the first amateur North American champion. Today, Gucci regularly finds Oregon black truffles and white truffles and is one of the few dogs invited to hunt Paragoid truffles in the developing North American commercial truffle industry. Jeannine’s understanding of dog behavior, wonderful sense of timing, and her ability to adapt to our unique needs makes her the perfect trainer for us.
After having success with our yellow lab Gucci in learning to hunt for truffles, we took a class from Jeannine May in Nosework. Under Jeannine’s guidance we slowly learned how to give Gucci the success she needed to build her drive and focus. Together we are a successful nosework team as we currently compete at the Elite Level. We have also taken Parkour and Rally-FrEe classes from Jeannine. With Jeannine’s support and expertise in clicker training and positive training methods we been able to develop a great relationship with our our active dog. We will always be grateful for Jeannine!”

Among the benefits from training with Jeannine, I most treasure my confidence in her abilities as a trainer to:
- Communicate pragmatic behavioral training principals and personalized applications,
- Shape her recommendations and guidance to the individual characteristics of the dog and the trainer on the team, and
- Ability to both model and coach practices that appear intuitive to Jeannine yet subtle to a novice trainer.
“I have worked with Jeannine May off and on over the years as a professional dog trainer, and have found her to be exceptionally knowledgeable when it comes to working with our canine companions. She has honed an intuitive understanding of the subtleties of canine body language.
She has also kept up on current trends in the world of dog training, a field that is constantly growing and changing. Her willingness to incorporate new ideas and approaches makes her a formidable trainer. She comes with my highest recommendation.”
