This is a puppy that knows ‘the game’…she knows that certain behaviors will cause the human to pay up! This gives you a dog that likes to train and understands the concept of performing a behaviors and receiving a reward.
In this particular scenario, Paisley has expanded on a simple reward for putting her feet on a cement block. This block was in the ‘potty yard’ and was originally a captured behavior–she just happened to do it so I clicked her and gave her a kibble. Her mom and half brother noticed and they did the same thing–and then the whole gang wanted to get on the deal.
I’ve continued to reward her standing on ‘things’ in different locations in and around the house, yard and places we visit. She continues to go to the block in the yard and just wait for me to notice and come reward her. This was not necessarily something I planned, but I did chose to continue to reward it.
I was very impressed with this girls initiative the other day. I was across the yard, once again picking up dog poop (never ending chore!) and glanced over towards the house. Paisley had her front feet up on the swing chair. Cute I thought to myself as I continued my chore. I was about 50′-60′ away when I first noticed her. I glanced again and she was still there! I broke out the cell camera as I got closer. She waited there until I came up and gave her the kibble (yes, plain kibble) that she knew she was due. She has trained her human well! And she is ‘training herself’ also. She is learning duration and more importantly self control. And best of all she is offering this behavior on her own! I love it!!
